This volume aims to provide the model-maker, historian and naval enthusiast with an accurate and comprehensive examination of the most famous warships of the age of sail. HMS Victory is probably the most famous ship in history, acting as Nelson's flagship at the battle of Trafalgar. She is the only remaining three deck wooden warship in the world. The 74-gun Bellona, was one of the earliest and successful ships of this class. The 74-gun ship was the workhorse of the Royal Navy and is, perhaps, the archetypal battleship of the age of sail. The 32-gun Essex was one of many successful American medium-sized frigate designs. Pandora, a 24 gun Frigate was typical of a sixth rate ship, she was wrecked in 1791 after sent to capture the Bounty mutineers.Used for inshore work, reconnaissance and assisting the Revenue Service, the cutter Alert was typical of many of these smaller craft. Contained in the text is a full and detailed description of the construction and career history of each ship. From the construction of the hull, through the rigging, yards and stays the detail is exhaustive. All this detail is also provided in the form of accurate and fully annotated detailed technical plans. Illustrating the text are images of the ships both contemporary and modern, the latter provided by full-scale reconstructions or models. A plate section provides colour images of the most important aspects of the ships. This series will provide accurate and detailed yet coherent and easy to understand examination of some of the world's most famous ships. |
