| Synopsis: |
Teen life in rural areas can be difficult in some ways. Rural families often make less money than those in suburban areas; isolation from urban centers means fewer opportunities. However, life away from cities can offer substantial rewards as well. Rural teens can more easily participate in outdoor sports such as rodeo, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing. The availability of open spaces such as nearby fields and woods enable them to do things that urban kids rarely get to do. Participation in outdoor recreation in turn helps rural teens develop value systems somewhat different from urban kids. Rural teens are more likely to connect with animals: they develop close relationships with dogs and horses, which serve as four-footed companions. At the same time, however, they know that animals provide food, both in the form of domesticated herd animals and wild game. Their knowledge and experiences are part of what makes North America such an interesting place to live! |
