Description: |
This volume argues that reinvigorating today's fragile democratic institutions depends upon extending the role of "secondary associations" - associations intermediate between the state and the market - as vehicles representing citizens and for formulating and executing policy. |
Synopsis: |
Few issues occupy a more central place on the agenda than democracy. In those societies where representative democracy has long been installed there are today new issues connected with its vitality, scope and quality. Elsewhere, whether in Latin America, the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe or South Africa, dictatorship has retreated but the new forms of democratic life are still to be consolidated. In some parts of the world - China, the Middle East and much of Africa - the breakthrough to any form of democracy has yet to be made, but the test may not be long postponed. This book is organized around a specific proposal, advanced by the editors, for deepening democracy. They argue that reinvigorating today's fragile democratic institutions depends upon extending the role of "secondary associations" - associations intermediate between the state and the market - as vehicles representing citizens and for formulating and executing policy. This argument leads up to a set of specific aides for reform to which the other contributors respond. The contributors include: Iris Young, Phillipe Schmitter, Andy Szasz, Jenny Mansbridge, Wolfgang Streeck, Ira Katznelson, Ellen Immergut, Paul Hirst, Joshua Cohen, Andrew Levine and Claus Offe. Joshua Cohen and Joel Rogers are the authors of "On Democracy" and "Rules of the Game". |
