Description: |
The English translation of the words in the Romani language showing in which countries the concepts entered the Romani Language during the trek from India to the UK |
Synopsis: |
Gypsies first left India a thousand years ago, probably as refugees, prisoners of war and slaves during what was then then the invasion of India by Islamic armies (and hence the ultimate formation of countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan). At first, their language was a form of Sanskrit but during the subsequent diaspora, words were added from the countries through which they travelled and the original Sanskrit words developed into new forms. This booklet shows the meanings of what words were added when. |
