Description: |
Dedicated to the physiology, biomechanics and ergonomics of manually propelled wheelchairs, particularly wheelchair propulsion. It deals with the state of the art of vehicle mechanics, wheelchair/user interaction, propulsion mechanics, cardiovascular strain, training activities, and more. |
Synopsis: |
Mobility is fundamental to health, social integration and well-being of the human being. Henceforth mobility is viewed as fundamental to the outcome of the rehabilitation process of wheelchair dependent persons. Lower limb disabled people are depending on a wheelchair for their mobility. Both the quality of the wheelchair, individual work capacity and the funcitonality of the wheelchair/user combination determine the freedom of mobility. This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop which was held within the framework of the four-year programme of the Concerted Action "Mobility Retoration for Paralyzed Persons" of the Commission of the Europeam Communities (COMAC-BME). It is dedicated to the exchange of know-how, theories and practical experiences with respect to the ergonomics of manual wheelchair propulsion, discussing physiology, biomechanics and ergonomics. The state of the art with respect to vehicle mechanics, wheelchair/user interaction, propulsion mechanisms, cardiovascular strain, training activities, seating, and more, is presented by a group of international experts in the field. |
