This White Paper, 'Delivering a Sustainable Railway (Cm. 7176)', from the Department for Transport is the first plan for major growth of the British railways since the 1950s. The Government is committing significant investment, with long-term outcomes including: a rail system capable of handling double today's level of freight and passenger traffic; a safer, more reliable and more efficient network; railways capable of catering for a more diverse, affluent and demanding population; and a system with a reduced carbon footprint and improved broader environmental performance.Over GBP 10 billion will be invested between 2009 and 2014, with overall Government support for the railway totalling over GBP 15 billion.
