Description: |
Presents an anthology of some of the prose and prose poems of 19th-century France. This reader sets these prose experiments in their cultural and historical context, and provides notes to elucidate references and allusions. |
Synopsis: |
This anthology offers translations of prose and prose poems that illustrate the great variety and richness of one of the most fruitful and exciting periods in French cultural history. "Revolutions in Writing" presents short stories by M rim e, Balzac, Nerval, Gautier, and Maupassant, polemical writings of Chateaubriand, Mme de Sta'l, and Michelet, and aesthetic criticism by Berlioz, Baudelaire, Banville, and Huysmans. Along with autobiographical writings of George Sand, Jules Vall s, and Pierre Loti, we find prose poems of Baudelaire, Mallarm, and Rimbaud exploring the boundaries between verse and prose. This reader sets these prose experiments in their cultural and historical context, and provides notes to elucidate references and allusions. |
