Description: |
This text offers an evaluation of a study commissioned by the DoH into residential child care in response to the difficulties and scandals that have beset the service. It aims to tackle the dilemmas which surround the provision of qualification training for residential care staff. |
Synopsis: |
An increase in the proportion of qualified staff in residential child care was recently called for as a possible solution to the difficulties and scandals that have beset the service. The DoH responded by commissioning an extensive four-year study (the Residential Child Care Initiative), funding the secondment of 400 managers, deputy managers and senior residential care staff onto DipSW programmes This book offers an evaluation of that study, tackling the dilemmas which surround the provision of qualification training for residential care staff today. It analyses topics such as the relevance of the DipSW for residential care managers, the best approach to qualification of staff, the various models of 'professional competence', and the kind of support and follow-up needed for the successful integration of qualified workers. |
