Synopsis: |
The Museum at Tiverton houses more than one item of major significance to the transport historian. Foremost amongst these is a full size former GWR locomotive that once operated the now defunct and still lamented branch lines to the town. In addition there are a number of smaller exhibits, including a unique survivor from the Victorian times: the notebook used by the engineer responsible for the building of the Exe Valley Railway. This remarkable document was found, of all places, in Australia, but is now secure in the Museum. Within its covers are a series of wonderful drawings and contemporary notes, never previously available to the historian or local history enthusiast, but brought to life in this new book compiled by Great Western devotee, Amyas Crump. In addition to the records within the notebook, this new book contains other examples, plans, photographs and documents from the Museum and other private collections, most of which will never have been seen before.Produced in conjunction with Tiverton Museum and the Broad Gauge Society, this new book, limited to just 1000 copies, will appeal to all with an interest in local history, railway history as well as the development of transport within the Victorian era. In all 48 pages, 24 in colour, feature not just the various lines to Tiverton but also a brief glimpse at the Culm Valley route from Tiverton Junction to Hemyock. |
