During a two-week period during the 1990 Styriarte Festival in Austria, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe performed all nine Beethoven symphonies, which were also recorded live for release on CD. The 5-CD set was met with high acclaim, winning several awards including the Gramophone Record of the Year Award in 1992. This film, produced and directed by Christopher Swann, records the performances of Beethoven's Symphony No.8 and No.6 ('The Pastoral') given by Harnoncourt and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in the Stefaniensaal in Graz at this time. The film also includes a documentary, 'The Making of the Symphonies', as well as interviews with Harnoncourt and members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
