Description: |
Collection of three heartwarming films. 'The Notebook' (2004) is a sweeping romance directed by Nick Cassavetes, set in a small coastal town in the American South - partly in the 1940s, and partly in the present day. In the present day scenes, an elderly man (James Garner) reads from a faded notebook to an old woman (Gena Rowlands) whom he regularly visits at her nursing home. As he reads, a passionate love story unfolds about a young couple - Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton (played in flashback scenes by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) - whose fledgling love affair was abruptly ended by circumstances and the sudden outbreak of World War II. But although fate drives the young couple apart, they continue to be haunted by memories of their affair, and when Noah returns from the war seven years later, he realises that he cannot forget the promises they made to one other - despite the fact that Allie is engaged to be married to another man. 'August Rush' (2007) is a modern-day fairytale drama that tells the story of a young musical prodigy seeking his birth parents. Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) is a brilliant young cellist who has just finish performing a concert in New York City. She meets Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a charismatic Irish guitar player, at a party. It's a case of mutual love at first sight as they bond over their shared love of music. It's the most wonderful night in Lyla's life but she must rush back to the hotel where her father, Thomas (William Sadler), is waiting for her. Lyla has promised to meet Louis in Washington Square, but her father forces her to go to her next concert. The young lovers are cruelly separated and Lyla is now left with child. Tragically, Lyla is in a car accident and the unborn child is lost. Eleven years have passed when Lyla's father makes the death bed confession that he secretly gave her baby boy up for adoption. August Rush (Freddie Highmore) is the child who uses his magical, musical powers to try and track down the parents who unwittingly abandoned him. Finally, in 'Hairspray' (1988), all of overweight Tracy Turnblatt's (Ricki Lake) dreams come true when she becomes the newest star on a television dance show. Soon the most popular dancer, Tracy finds herself the focus of a dirty tricks campaign by a bitchy rival - but more important is her campaign to have her black friends accepted on the all-white show. |
