Eric Rohmer's study of the hopes and dreams of a lonely young woman, which is rendered in almost entirely improvised dialogue - and is the fifth in his 'Comedies et Proverbes' cycle. An unhappy young Parisian, Delphine (Marie Riviere), expecting to spend the summer in Greece, is let down by her travelling companion at the last moment, so decides to go away on her own - at first to Cherbourg and later to Biarritz. She meets a fellow traveller, Swedish tourist Carita, who tries to cheer her up; but the two women have very different ways of dealing with love and Delphine tries desperately to hold onto her romantic view of true love. |
