Description: |
A collection of essays on the relationship between law and religion in the Old and New Testaments. It focuses on the traditions of the Israelites, the actions and teachings of Jesus, and the subsequent apostolic tradition. |
Synopsis: |
The relationship between law and religion in the Old and New Testament has become an important focus of interest in biblical studies. This symposium of thirteen essays by distinguished scholars provides an overview of the current debate. Each essay treats a particular topic in some depth, while making a contribution to its own subject, thus becoming part of the debate itself. The essays are grouped into three sections. The Law in Israelite Religion touches on the foundation of the connection between law and religion in ancient Israel, the decisive influence of the Deuteronomic reform and the radical new understanding now emerging of the later development in Judaism of the New Testament Period. The Law in the Jesus Tradition illustrates the contemporary challenge to the conventional picture of Jesus and the Law, a central area of debate in New Testament studies. The Law in Paul and the Apostolic Tradition challenges the conventional picture of Paul and follows through with two studies of post-Pauline developments. All the contributors are members of the Erhardt Seminar group which meets at the University of Manchester: Philip S. Alexander, Senior Lecturer in Jewish Studies; Arnold A.Anderson, Senior Lecturer in Old Testament Studies; Richard Bauckham, Reader in the History of Christian Thought; George Brooke, Lecturer in Intertestamental Literature; F.F. Bruce, Emeritus Professor, University of Manchester; Adrian Curtis, Lecturer in Old Testament Studies; Gerald Downing, Vice-Principal of the Northern Ordination Course; Martin Kitchen, Chaplain to Manchester Polytechnic; Barnabas Lindars (Editor), Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis; Roger Tomes, Lecturer in Old Testament at Northern College, Manchester; and, Christopher Tuckett, Lecturer in New Testament Studies. |
