Description: Presenting an innovative take on researching early childhood, this book provides an international comparison of the cultural and familial influences that shape the growth of young children. The book presents a unique methodology, and includes chapters on musicality, security, humour and eating.
Synopsis: This book presents an innovative approach to investigating early childhood and human culture more generally. The Day in the Life project studied young children and their families in seven different countries worldwide. The findings of the international, multidisciplinary team are synthesised here in a collaboratively authored study. Different paths to thriving are illustrated through words and images as the authors capture interactions of the girls with their environments, including caregivers. Embodiment, sound, movement and language are all considered in the light of a dynamic approach to multimodal research. The result is a fascinating new contribution to studies of human culture, demonstrating how the children learn an enormous amount about the environments in which they live, transforming their own understanding and family life in the course of their activities. The book will be of interest to all those engaged in research and practice concerned with resilience in early childhood, families and the development of multimodal, participatory research methods.
