Description: This book argues that the new actors in global health constitute a 'private turn' in global health governance, and provides theoretical and practical grounds for viewing global health partnerships and philanthropic foundations as closely aligned in their ideational and material approaches to a range of important issues and crises.
Synopsis: In recent decades, global health has been marked by the entrance of new and powerful actors who have made a range of high-profile interventions into some of the most pressing health crises of our age. Both Global Health Partnerships (such as the Global Fund and the GAVI Alliance) and Philanthropic Foundations active in global health (such as the Bill and Melinda Gates, Clinton and Rockefeller foundations) have enormous resources at their disposal and exert tremendous agenda setting power over the landscape of global health governance. This book makes a case for treating these new actors as practically and theoretically linked, arguing that their legitimation as governance actors is representative of a 'private turn' in the governance of this traditionally very 'public' area of global life. It analyses questions of authority, legitimacy and effectiveness of these new actors, using both thematic approaches and case studies.
