Description: A thesis which claims that the treatment of information as a commodity through modern computer and telecommunication technology will innevitably result in the reduction of access to information. This, in turn will mean that information will become a class-based privilege, metered out by the corporate sector.
Synopsis: The image of class struggle contrasts with the promise of the information age. This book shows how class conflict continues to remain an issue, and challenges the notion that in a well-educated society, with the help of the computer and telecommunication technologies, that a more comfortable existence is available. In his economic and political analysis, the author reveals how the efforts of buisness to profit from the sale of information could result in the reduction of access to information, rather than an increase. He demonstrates how the treatment of information as a commodity may cause it to be more regulated and less accessible. He also argues that in the future, it will be a class-based privilege to access and afford information, and the rights of individuals will disintegrate as the power of the corporate sector grows.
