Description: |
A critical study to discuss the nature of comedy with exclusive reference to novels. Distinguishing between different kinds of humour, it shows how comedy works in practice under changing literary, social and environmental conditions, and is designed to interest academic and general readers alike. |
Synopsis: |
Comedy is usually discussed in relation to drama. Here, however, it is analysed with exclusive reference to English prose fiction. Drawing on a wide variety of texts in order to observe the comedic process in action, Glen Cavaliero examines the ways in which irony, satire, celebration, parody, farce and other categories of comedy function within the confines of a novel. Among the many authors discussed are Fielding, Sterne, Jane Austen, Thackeray, Dickens, Trollope, Forster, Lawrence, Waugh and Beckett; together with such less familiar names as 'Elizabeth', Ronald Firbank, T. F. Powys and Sylvia Townsend Warner. In focusing on specific novels the author takes account of their historical and literary contexts, including the responses of their readers, developing a practical theory of comedy based on its role as a corrective to monolithic ideas and attitudes. |
