On Sunday, October 3, 1993, members of the elite American Rangers in Mogadishu attempted to capture the Samali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. As they descended from sixteen Blackhawk helicopters onto the streets of Mogadishu, Somali gunmen were waiting, and opened fire from three directions. The Rangers sought cover, and settled in for a wild firefight. Their mission was to go down in history as the fiercest ground combat seen by American forces since the TET offensive in 1968.
