This is the first volume of a two-volume collection of Karl-Otto Apel's most important essays since his "Transformation der Philosophie". These volumes, which contain previously unavailable and not easily accessible primary material on contemporary debates in the North American, British and German philosophy, should be of interest to specialists of contemporary German philosophy, North American pragmatism, and analytic philosophy, as well as to ethicists and semioticians. Apel, one of the most important philosophers of postwar Germany, offers a synthesis of the continental and the analytic philosophies of language via a semiotic transformation of Kantian philosophy. He develops a postmetaphysical philosophical system that is grounded semiotically and transcendentally in a theory of types of rationality, a pragmatic theory of truth, a hermeneutics, an anthropology, and a discoursive ethics. His essays contribute to an important current philosophical concern - the discoursive theory of ethics - and to its underpinning theory of communicative rationality, both of which have previously been primarily associated with Jurgen Habermas. |
