One of the most influential economic, social and political theorists in Britain this century, J A Hobson (1858-1940) was one of the most influential economic, social and political theorists in Britain this century. He was an original thinker who refused to treat economics in isolation from related subjects - it was his power to synthesise that made his work extremely valuable. This collection focuses on his writings in economics - his best remembered contribution to the theory of underconsumption was heralded by Keynes as a pioneering work and has also had a considerable impact on many subsequent economists. Two of the volumes are devoted to articles and all six have new introductions written by leading scholars in the field. New introduction by Roger E. Backhouse Contents: The Physiology of Industry [1889] 232pp This book attracted the hostile attention of orthodox economists, it remains one of Hobson's key books, containing the first exposition of some of the ideas that he continued to expound throughout his career.The Problem of the Unemployed [1896] 198pp Chosen as one of the best accounts of Hobson's underconsumptionism, it is also interesting as one of the first books to deal with the new awareness of unemployment. Appendix: Underconsumption. An exposition and a reply Writings on Distribution and Welfare Economics [1890-1937] 276pp This selection of essays brings together some of the main essays in which Hobnson confronted neoclassical economics. New introduction by Peter J. Cain The Industrial System [1910] 358pp In this work Hobson expounded the notions of 'cost' and 'surplus' which form the basis of his famous argument about underconsumption. Work and Wealth: A Human Valuation [1914] 383pp Hobson's most systematic attempt to combine his heterodox economic ideas with his wider views on the nature of social progress and the possibilities for the good life in a democratic society. Writings on Imperialism and Internationalism [1891-1930] 158pp Here Hobson makes his emphatic statement on the question of imperialism and offers conclusions to the nature of European imperialism - sometimes markedly different from those with which he is usually associated. |
