Synopsis: |
Cornelia Parker (b. 1956) is one of the most thoughtful and profound artists working in Britain today. Her wide-ranging practice, chiefly in sculpture and installation, touches on the fragility of human experience. Exploring everything from ghosts and gravity to relics and the unconscious, she transforms everyday, ordinary objects into compelling works of art. Parkers projects which have included blowing up a shed, steamrolling musical instruments, exploding a firework made from a pulverised meteorite, and suspending charcoal taken from a church struck by lightning have captured the public imagination since she first came to prominence in the 1990s. This monograph, the first full survey of Parkers career, traces the development of her art from the late 1970s to the present day. Organised chronologically to show the development of her thinking and practice, the book also features five thematic essays by curator and writer Iwona Blazwick. Over 175 works are illustrated, each accompanied by a commentary from the artist herself. The book features a preface by Yoko Ono and an introduction by Bruce Ferguson, which places Parkers work in context. This edition is limited to 150 copies, plus 10 Artists Proofs, each containing a black and white photographic print of Truth to Materials, 2013, individually numbered and signed by the artist. |
