This book also investigates the nature and depth of Schopenhauer's pessimism, and the extent to which it is rooted in his metaphysics. Drawing upon his account of heredity in its analysis of his conception of the individual character, this book presents a new understanding of the Will as Schopenhauer's 'thing-in-itself', which sheds fresh light on his conceptions of the resignation of the will-to-live and compassion, as well as their moral and metaphysical implications. In addition, this volume provides a broad account of the general model of value in Schopenhauer's philosophy, which serves to ground an evaluation of the contribution made by life's worthwhile states to existence, and an assessment of the value of human life itself. |
