Synopsis: |
This volume, published in conjunction with the "Mary and Leigh Block Gallery's 1994" exhibition, offers significant new insights into the politics, subjectivity, and aesthetic practice in contemporary South Africa. Photogr aphs of over 125 images explore the dimensions of possibility of a single medium - paper. Essays by David Bunn and Jane Taylor, Colin Richards, Elza Miles and Gavin Younge shed insight into the complicated relationship between figure and ground, and body and landscape, in works produced within a political and historical situation which has, for generations, legislated space and subjectivity. In addition to including images by South African artists such as Alan Crump, Tommy Motswai, Gideon Mendel and Pippa Siopis, the volume extends the definition of work on paper to include a selection of new works of fiction by writers such as Joel Matlov, Ivan Vladislavic, John Miles, and Zoe Witcomb, |
