Synopsis: |
The archives and manuscripts of the Royal Society provide an excellent record of the development of science in Britain since the 17th century. This work sets out in detail the archival resources available at the Society for researchers. Administrative records at the Society date from its foundation in 1660. Since then, the Society has maintained records of its activities as well as creating, either from its own material or through gift or purchase, an impressive colleciton of manuscripts. The Society also holds archival material relating to its Fellows in the form of correspondence, scientific papers, notebooks and information on the scientific developments of the 17th and 18th centuries in particular, and on the Fellowship and its contribution to the scientific achievements of the past three-and-a-half centuries. This illustrated description of the archives and manuscripts updates R.K. Bluhm's "A Guide to the Archives of the Royal Society" (1956) and provides an up-to-date account of the holdings of the Society. It should be of interest to Fellows, historians of science, and all interested in the history of the Society and its Fellowship. |
