Synopsis: |
The first paper in the Wider Benefits of Learning Papers series is by members of the Centre for Research on the Wider Benefits of Learning. The Centre is a joint initiative of the Institute of Education and Birkbeck College. This review lays the foundations for further analysis of the wider benefits of learning by bringing together diverse strands, some theoretical, some empirical. Part A describes the origins and the scope of the work of the Centre, both generally and with respect to different quantitative and qualitative approaches to modelling and measuring. Part B provides a selective overview of each of five overlapping social domains - and models employed to analyse them - in the context of their relations to learning. The domains are Health, Ageing, Families, Crime and Citizenship. Part C presents an outline of possible directions for further research, picking up on selected methodological issues raised and their implications. |
