Synopsis: |
In an attempt to disseminate knowledge as well as bring together clinicians and scientists working in different fields of scientific endeavour, this proceedings volume examines many facets of germ-cell tumours. It is drawn from the Fourth International Leeds Germ Cell Tumour Conference, held at the Marriott Hotel, Leeds, November 1997, under the auspices of the Yorkshire Cancer Organization. Germ-cell tumours are rare, but efforts on many fronts over the last two decades have led to high curative success rates, to the extent that they have been described as "a model for a curable solid tumour". The book provides coverage on aetiology and biology with reference to molecular biology and genetics, the natural history of treated disease and serum tumour markers. The relationship between these tumours and testicular maldescent, cryptorchidism, carcinoma in situ (CIS) and declining seme quality is explored. Aspects of the clinical management of seminoma and non-seminomatous tumours of the testis is examined, especially radiotherapy, surgery, chemotherapy, imaging, morbidity of therapy and quality of life issues. There is also coverage of mediastinal, central nervous system and paediatric germ-cell tumours. |
