Description: |
Prior to the construction of a new electricity substation at Northfleet, Kent in 1999 Oxford Archaeological Unit excavated archaeological remains found on the site. This report describes the results of that excavation. |
Synopsis: |
The construction of a new electricity substation at Northfleet, Kent by the National Grid Company provided an opportunity to investigate archaeological remains found on the site, and in 1999 Oxford Archaeological Unit excavated the site prior to the substation's construction. This report describes the results of that excavation. The excavation revealed field boundaries, paddocks and structural remains dating to the 11th and 12th centuries, and possibly relating to the settlement know as Wenifalle in the late 12th century. The settlement of Wenifalle survived in the form of a nearby farm known as Wingfield Bank until the 20th century. The proximity of the Roman settlement at nearby Springhead has tended to distract from the later settlement in the area, so the results of this excavation represent a useful addition to the modest body of evidence relating to medieval rural settlement in North Kent. |
