| Synopsis: |
Some plants are instantly linked to certain places or people: the red rose of Lancaster or 'Granny Smith' apples for example. But how many of us know that Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland have their own share of plant celebrities. This book sets out to identify these plants and describe their connections with this area. In the 18th century Florists' Societies throughout the country developed auriculas, carnations and other plants. There was a Society of Florists at Leicester from the 1750s and Lutterworth's Gooseberry Show Society was founded before 1815 with local competitions being held for over a hundred years. This enthusiasm continues today with keen interest being shown locally by nurseries and specialist societies. Equally important in increasing the range of plants has been the collection of new species from other parts of the world. Leicestershire's contribution was twofold with the Sherard brothers in the early 18th century and Frederick Burbidge in the late 19th: each introducing interesting new plants to Britain. For over 300 years this area has played a full part in bringing plants to British gardens. It is for gardeners to select the best of the new whilst not forgetting to go on growing the living heritage of garden plants already with us. |
