The author explores how middle of the road Anglicans are in a position to affirm all that is good in a complex heritage. |
Synopsis: |
In Anglican Soup David Thompson sees all the necessary ingredients to sustain Christian living. These include Orthodox belief, encapsulated in a minimalist form in the Lambeth Quadrilateral, Catholic order and practice, Pentecostal anointing, Puritan holiness and an Evangelical warmth and fervour. Middle of the road Anglicans are in a position to affirm all that is good in a complex heritage. Rather than bloated broad churchmen they are passionate moderates who are in touch with a variety of traditions which have trickled down through the centuries and irrigated their own spiritual lives. Anglican Soup considers the contribution to Anglican Church history of those who have thrived on beautiful soup. It is a good starter for moderate Christians. It is a truism that in this life we never quite make it. Our soup is only a starter - the final banquet comes later. Meanwhile during the course of our sojourn here on earth there is no good reason why we may not be adequately sustained by 'Beautiful soup so rich and green waiting in a hot tureen.' A good Anglican embraces the kind of moderation which St Paul might have had in mind when he said, 'Let your moderation be known unto all men.'To be moderate doesn't mean anything goes. It hardly needs to be said that wherever we try to follow in the footsteps of Christ we will find it costly. It is easy to fail as an Anglican because we are given a lot of leeway. There is no inquisition, no magisterium and there is a refreshing openness to the world. |
