Australia is known for its unique wildlife. The country is home to a variety of mammals. The marsupials which, among others, include the kangaroo, koala, and wombat, make up the largest group of mammals. The word marsupial is derived from the Latin marsupium, which means pouch. An infant marsupial is known as a joey. Marsupials have a very short gestation period (about four to five weeks), and the joey is an essentially helpless embryo. The blind, furless, miniature newly born, has to crawl across its mother's fur to make its way into the pouch. The pouch gives protection to the very young animal and contains the teats from which it feeds. Nourished on its mother's milk, it grows to a well-developed stage before it leaves the pouch.
