Synopsis: |
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable symbols of the United States. An enormous monument to democracy, it was a gift from France, a country that hoped for a government as successful as America's. Many immigrants to the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries sailed beneath the Statue's torch. From conception to unveiling, Lady Liberty took more than ten years to complete. A French college professor and writer named Edouard Rene de Laboulaye came up with the idea in 1865. His friend, the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, began work on the statue in 1874. The Statue of Liberty was finally revealed in 1886. Since then, it has become a world-wide symbol of the freedom and democracy promised by the United States of America. |
