Inspired by the painings of many artists, in particular the heady interiors by Matisse and Bonnard, Hilton developed an ability to use colour, line and light to evoke a distinctive atmosphere.This publication accompanies an important exhibition curated by Susan Daniel-McElroy for Tate St Ives that highlights the artist's distinctive approach and reveals her working practices through the inclusion of drawings in a selected retrospective that spans the period 1950-2007.Andrew Lambirth's insightful essay considers Hilton's evolving approach to her paintings, her knowledge of the physical properties and processes of her chosen material and the context of St Ives and Modernism. |
