Synopsis: |
Many of the world's languages and cultures are under threat -and at stake are not simply the normal processes of cultural change and cross-fertilization. Jeremy Seabrook argues that the rich and precious diversity of even powerful and historically remarkable cultures is threatened by an onslaught of global concentrations of power and wealth. In this book, he takes the case of Bengal. A humanistic and ancient culture with a rich tradition of song, dance, drama and folk culture which is still practised by countless villagers across Bangladesh and West Bengal. Yet threatened by Western economic penetration, by new and alien forms of religious fundamentalism imported from outside, and by the industrialized world's pop culture purveyed by satellite and video. At the same time, and a hopeful sign, a struggle is taking place. Many Bengalis are resisting this violent attack. The outcome is as important for other threatened cultures as it is for humanity at large. |
