Synopsis: |
David Lloyd George, who laid the foundations of the Welfare State and was the acclaimed Prime Minister during the First World War, is a much-debated figure. This new book focuses on the early career and political philosophy of Lloyd George. Breaking from 'received wisdom' that he was a pure careerist, Emyr Price states that the radical Welsh non-conformist attempted, at every stage of his long political career to nurture the interests of Wales and her language as well as furthering the rights and living conditions of working people. The author argues that David Lloyd George was the founder of modern Welsh nationalism and brought his radical Welsh political beliefs into mainstream British politics through his reforms of the House of Lords and the introduction of National Insurance. Even the issue of Irish Home Rule saw Lloyd George, who probably agreed with the principle, pushing the Tory-dominated government to give as much as he thought he could get for Ireland.Using many original Welsh-language sources not previously studied, this new book is a major contribution to our knowledge of Lloyd George and provides a more thorough and comprehensive background to the man who left such a huge legacy to Welsh and British political, cultural and social life. |
