Synopsis: |
T.E. Lawrence's correspondence with Charlotte Shaw, which takes up most of these volumes, began hesitantly but grew to such an extent that it became a major biographical resource for his post-war years. The first volume in this set charts the progress of his lavish subscription edition of 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom'. Volumes II and III, covering 1927 and 1928, provide an almost weekly account of life in the ranks of the RAF in what was then India. The final volume reflects Lawrence's work helping to improve RAF rescue boats - the passion of his final years. Throughout, Charlotte sent him recent books to read, especially by Irish writers. Lawrence discusses many of them in his letters. Much of the Lawrence-Shaw correspondence was first published in this edition, which contains extensive notes explaining obscure allusions in the text. Each volume contains an index by Hazel K. Bell, twice winner of the Wheatley Medal for indexing. These scholarly fine-press editions were printed for subscribers, but are now available more widely as a set. Note that this is a full-cloth craft binding intended for libraries.Sets are also available in a quarter-cloth series binding by The Fine Book Bindery, ISBN 9781873141052 |
