Description: |
A collection of essays on the relationship of so-called Social Christianity and mainstream American Protestantism. The articles address the themes of the general movement and focus on more specific issues such as Prohibition and pacificism. |
Synopsis: |
American Protestantism saw its town-and-country hold give way to hugh urban and industrial complexes. As factory and corporate life grew, so did the misery. Through the 19th and 20th centuries there developed a set of addresses to the social questions. Sometimes these approaches were called "Christian Socialism" or "Social Christianity". The leaders of these movements engaged in critiques of the competitive economy, gave visibility to its concerns and came up with alternatives which had some political consequence and often disturbed the peace of the churches. These articles address the themes of the general movement and look at specific issues such as Prohibition, pacifism and other focused causes. An essay on the monk Thomas Merton complements those on Protestantism and suggests the larger picture of social Christianity. |
