Synopsis: |
During the 1960's, faced with an unstable foreign policy as well as a high demand for resources, China was forced to relocate most of its heavy industry and armament factories. Originally situated on China's coast and in the North close to the Russian border, these factories were obliged to relocate to the country's heartland, hidden away and better protected. So the 'Third Line' was created. One by one factories were closed down and the workers went back to their homes, leaving the area abandoned, full of ghost towns, in the truest sense of the word, captured here in the photos of Chen Jiagang. |
