Description: |
Triple bill featuring three family comedies. 'Because of Winn-Dixie' (2005) is based on the novel by Kate DeCamillo. A ten-year-old girl (AnnaSophia Robb), abandoned by her mother when she was three, moves to a small town in Florida with her father (Jeff Daniels), a preacher. While there, she adopts a stray dog whom she names after the local supermarket where he was found. With her goofy pooch by her side, she meets an eclectic group of townspeople and rekindles an almost lost relationship with her father. 'The Sandlot' (1994) tells the story of the friendship between two 12-year old boys, Scotty and Benny. Scotty and his family move to town and Scotty, although useless at baseball, manages to get a place with a game played in a sandlot out the back of his house, thanks to the engineering of a catch by the team's best player, Benny. As the summer progresses the two boys become good friends while having occasional adventures with the next-door neighbour's terrifying dog - The Beast. In 'Five Children and It!' (2004), during the First World War a group of children are sent to stay with their eccentric Uncle Albert (Kenneth Branagh). There, they meet 'It', a Psammead - or sand fairy - in a gravel pit. This ancient, peculiar and rather irritable creature (voiced by Eddie Izzard) has the power to grant the children a wish every day, that will last until sunset. But the children soon discover it is harder than one might imagine to think of sensible wishes - and each one gets them into all kinds of unexpected scrapes. |
