Description: |
Triple bill of classic films starring Burgess Meredith. In 'The Man On the Eiffel Tower' (1950), based on the Georges Simenon novel, poverty stricken medical student Johann Radek (Franchot Tone) is paid by Bill Kirby (Robert Hutton) to murder his wealthy aunt. Meredith plays the knife grinder who becomes the initial suspect. Eventually, when the real killer's identity is revealed, the police and Inspector Maigret (Charles Laughton) set chase through the streets of Paris and finally up the girders of the Eiffel Tower. This film was directed by Meredith when he replaced Irving Allen at the behest of Charles Laughton. 'Winterset' (1936) is based on the play by Maxwell Anderson which was, in turn, loosely based on the true life trial of the Italian anarchists, Sacco and Vanzetti. Immigrant radical Bartolomeo Romagna (John Carradine) is falsely tried and executed for a payroll robbery. Years later, his son, Mio (Meredith), sets out to find the truth of the crime and to bring gangster, Trock Estrella (Eduardo Ciannelli), to justice. In 'Second Chorus' (1940), two talented trumpeters (Fred Astaire and Meredith) are on the brink of graduating when they meet Ellen, a beautiful young student (Paulette Goddard). They ask her to manage their band, but their collaboration ends when the boys leave college. Ellen, meanwhile, has started to manage another successful band, and so tries to use her new contacts to help the boys break into showbiz. |
