Description: |
Triple-bill of US film dramas. In 'Reign Over Me' (2007), Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler), after having lost his family in the 9/11 attack, has become a shadow of his former self in the five years that have passed since the tragedy. When he runs into his former college roommate Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle) by chance, their rekindled friendship proves to be a lifeline for both men. 'The Pursuit of Happyness' (2006), set in early 1980s San Francisco, charts the hard times and eventual comeback of Chris Gardner (Will Smith), a suddenly single salesman who has custody of his son, but finds that providing for the two of them is a challenge in the increasingly unstable economic climate. In the face of this difficult life, Chris has the desperate inspiration to try for a stockbroker internship where one in twenty has a chance of a lucrative full time career. Together, father and son struggle through homelessness, jail time, tax seizure and the overall punishing despair in a quest that would make Gardner a respected millionaire. Finally, in 'Scent of a Woman' (1992), hard-up student Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell) agrees to a job over Thanksgiving weekend to earn some much-needed cash: he has to escort blind, embittered ex-Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade (Al Pacino) as he indulges the good life in New York city. Slade plans to eat, drink, make merry and womanise - but unbeknown to Charlie, Slade is also intent on blowing his own brains out at the end of the excursion. |
