Description: |
Chilling '70s British film dealing with loneliness and the nature of trust. Brenda (Rita Tushingham) is a lonely, dowdy young woman who occupies herself writing children's stories. Feeling that her native Liverpool is holding her back, she moves to London and tries to join the cool scene there. Working in a trendy boutique and living with a man-eater with a heart of Gold, she soon finds that she's too plain to be taken in by the movers and shakers. Desolate, she resorts to some strange behaviour to meet people: kidnapping a dog belonging to a handsome stranger she's seen around. Peter (Shane Bryant), the dog's owner, seems the first man to really try to get to know her and their relationship blossoms, despite its unconventional tone. Peter, it turns out, has a skeleton or two in his closet - perhaps even literally. Widely regarded as one of Hammer Films' most disturbing and accomplished pictures - no longer tied to the formulaic capes, hair and teeth horror genre, they here utilise a more psychological method. |
