Synopsis:

A comprehensive learning text written specifically for education majors. The course has long been a staple item in the masters level curriculum, but in recent years is beginning to occasionally show up in the undergraduate curriculum. This usually occurs when the old educational psychology survey course has been abandoned due to curriculum reform. Part one, which comprises 80% of this text, presents, illustrates, and compares the major contemporary learning theories. Part two then provides an opportunity to apply these theories in an integrated fashion to a series of short cases that are organized around the following learning outcomes: cognitive strategies, positive attitudes and motivation to learn, retention of verbal information, and itellectual skills. No other text has such an application section. To facilitate comparing and contrasting theories, each Part one chapter follows the same format. Each theory ends by reviewing the same set of core issues: What is learned? What is the emphasis on environmental vs. organismic factors? What is the source of motivation? What produces transfer? and What are the important variables related to instruction?Part one then ends with a brief overview that compares and contrasts each theory on each of these core questions. To insure active processing of the theoretical material, questions and exercises have been inserted into all of the Part one chapters following the presentation of important concepts and principles. Answers are provided at the end of the chapter. Similarly, the Part two cases provide a further opportunity for students to manipulate and thereby master the material. Part one covers all of the major theories of learning including a full chapter on the social interaction work of Lev Vygotsky.
