Synopsis: |
This text takes a scientific approach to the history of modern psychology ranging from the publication of Fechner's "Elements of Psychophysics" in the mid-19th century to the present. This edition contains a new introductory chapter which features a lengthy treatment of the problem of explanation in scientific psychology, organized around issues in philosophy of science as they relate to psychology. The text reflects the recent scholarship on the founders of German psychology, and expands coverage of the German university setting as it shaped early German psychology, and isolates Wundt from the second generation of psychologists who broke sharply with the founder on many issues. This edition contains revised material such as a more critical stance on Freud, including the treatment of the Freud-Fliess letters, and focusing on two major issues: the controversies over the unconscious, and why Freud places such great emphasis on sex. The author connects the history of psychology with general history, drawing upon major thinkers of psychology's pre-scientific past. |
