This final volume of acta from Coventry covers the ecclesiastical careers of three very different bishops: Master Gerard Pucelle (1183-4), who was one of the foremost early English canon law masters; Hugh de Nonant, a significant figure in the Longchamp dispute, who was a "curialis" par excellence, but is important here for his attempt to destroy the monastic cathedral at Coventry and replace it with seculars; and Geoffrey Muschamp (1198-1208) who was a protege of Geoffrey Plantagenet at York. Included are some 143 documents. Detailed appendices discuss various important sources of diocesan history. This volume of English Episcopal Acta complements Volumes 14 and 16, which together cover the period 1072-1182. |
