Synopsis: |
Building on its previous report on science teaching at secondary school level (HCP 508-1, session 2001-02; ISBN 0215004221), the Committee's report examines strategic science provision in English universities (except for non-devolved policy areas, for example relating to trade and industry, where the report refers to the UK as a whole). Issues discussed include: the current provision of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in universities and the impact of departmental closures; the debate over a skills shortage; undergraduate demand for STEM courses; the higher education funding system for research and teaching; the sustainability of the current situation, collaboration and the 'hub and spokes' model of provision; and regional issues. The Committee's findings include that a short-term approach to university funding has led to a worrying decline in the number of STEM graduates and to departmental closures; and unless some long-term measures are taken to ensure the sector's sustainability, the Government may find that it has a shortage of STEM graduates to meet its economic needs. |
