Synopsis: |
The combined annual procurement budget of central and local government in the UK in about GBP 125 billion a year, and purchasing decisions made have significant implications for sustainable development objectives. However, there are constraints on how procurement money is spent, in terms of securing value for taxpayers money and in the EU context to maintain free competition across member states. Whilst these two considerations have dominated public procurement until recently, the objective of ensuring sustainable development through procurement is now becoming a recognised consideration. The Committee's inquiry has focused on how sustainable public procurement is being implemented across government and whether there is a clear strategy to drive forward these objectives. Due to lack of parliamentary time to examine these issues in detail, the Committee has published the oral and written evidence taken during the course of its inquiry, and highlights some broad issues which its successor Committee will be likely to return to discuss in the future. |
