Description: |
The Radical Attitude and Modern Political Theory focuses on the appearance of modernity that can be best described as radical. First appearing in the sixteenth century, the attitude is best seen not as a coherent ideology or tradition but as a series of conceptual resources that continue to inform political discourse in the present. |
Synopsis: |
We tend to think of the history of political thought in terms of well-defined ideologies or traditions. The Radical Attitude challenges this view through a re-reading of some of the central texts of modern political theory. It argues against the tendency to recruit certain authors or texts to 'conservative' or 'radical' traditions. But it goes further. Many texts that are conventionally thought of 'conservative', such as Hobbes's Leviathan, in fact adopt the vocabulary and conceptual tools of their 'radical' opponents. While one point of the argument is to demonstrate that the labels 'radical' and 'conservative' only have meaning in specific contexts, a much broader claim is made. In all of the texts examined, what can be seen is the articulation of a radical attitude towards modernity. What unifies these texts is an ambivalent understanding of political power - it is necessary for the transformation of the world, but at the same time its inherently dangerous nature requires that it be suppressed or overcome. The anti-political tendency of the radical attitude continues to characterise a good deal of political thinking - it must be challenged if we are to provide realistic solutions to the problems of order and change in the world today. |
