Synopsis: |
A study of the crucial part played by extra-parliamentary protest in the maturing of democracy in West Germany. The authors trace the history of political protest: the campaigns against rearmament and nuclear arms in the 1950s, the anti-authoritarian student movement in the 1960s, the feminist and ecology movement that emerged in the 1970s and the mass opposition to nuclear arms in the 1980s. The authors also examine the political role of critical intellectuals, both within these movements and in their own right, and assess the claim of the Greens to be the mouthpiece of protest in parliament. Rob Burns is author of "The Quest for Modernity". Wilfried Van der Will is author of "The German novel and the Affluent Society" (with the late R.H.Thomas) |
