Synopsis: |
This volume presents contributions to the debate on transitional and long-term development issues in South Africa made at the Conference on the Transitional and Long-term Development Issues in South Africa held in Johannesburg in November/ December 1995. The collection provides an overview of the critical issues to be addressed by policy-makers as they map a path for the transition process in South Africa. The challenges to policy-makers in South Africa are analysed with a view to contributing to a sustainable process of social, political and economic reform. The importance of this process to South Africa, as well as its regional neighbours, underscores the value of this book. An introductory chapter (not presented at the conference) provides a framework within which to review the other contributions. It focuses on the government's recently unveiled macroeconomic strategy, which is designed to give more in-depth content and focus to the Reconstruction and Development Programme (planned to provide a broad general vision of the government's vision for socio-economic reform in South Africa). |
