Description: |
Collection of key documents concerning the control and monitoring of Iraqi weaponry after the Gulf war. |
Synopsis: |
At the conclusion of the Gulf conflict in 1991, Iraq was required to accept almost unprecedented provisions for the destruction and monitoring of its chemical, biological, nuclear and certain conventional weapons facilities. The implementation of these commitments proved difficult, and UN arms inspectors and the International Atomic Energy Agency faced serious difficulty in carrying out their mandate. Confrontation with the UN Security Council ensued until, finally, in 1994, a programme for long-term monitoring was agreed with Iraq. This volume contains the texts of Iraq's commitments relating to nuclear non-proliferation, UN materials detailing the work of the Special Commission for the disarming and long-term monitoring of Iraq, as well as a comprehensive collection of International Atomic Energy Agency documents which would not otherwise be available. A brief introduction analyses the legal authority for the action taken. |
